Good news for women and gig workers in West Bengal! The state government has presented an interim budget of ₹4.06 lakh crore for the financial year 2026-27, with a strong focus on social welfare and public needs. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya described this budget as one that prioritizes the welfare of women, youth, gig workers, and government employees, aiming to improve the economic conditions of millions across the state.

Lakshmi Bhandar Scheme Gets a Major Increase

The standout feature of the budget is the expansion of the Lakshmi Bhandar Yojana . Starting February 2026, women beneficiaries will receive an additional ₹500 per month, taking the total to ₹1,700 for SC/ST women and ₹1,500 for women from other categories. The scheme is targeted at women aged 25 to 60 who live in West Bengal, whose families are registered under the Swasthya Sathi Yojana, and who are not government employees, salaried workers, or pension recipients.

This increase is expected to provide a significant financial boost for families, helping women contribute more to household income and personal savings. The move is seen as part of the government’s larger push toward women’s empowerment and economic security.

Gig Workers Finally Get Social Security

For the first time, the budget includes gig workers in state welfare schemes. Those engaged in app-based or temporary jobs will now be eligible for social security programs, such as Swasthya Sathi, ensuring access to health care and other financial protections. This inclusion is a major step toward recognizing the growing gig economy and providing its workers with the safety net that regular employees enjoy.

Other Highlights of the Budget

Besides Lakshmi Bhandar and social security for gig workers, the budget also focuses on schemes for youth development, government employees, and vulnerable sections of society. While full details will be released with the final budget, these initiatives signal the state’s commitment to inclusive growth and strengthening public welfare.

With these measures, West Bengal aims to improve the quality of life for women and gig workers, helping them achieve greater financial independence and security. The budget is being hailed as a step toward inclusive development, supporting both traditional households and the modern workforce in the state.
