Ahead of Republic Day 2026, the Centre has announced the recipients of the prestigious Padma Awards, recognising outstanding contributions across diverse fields. A total of 131 individuals have been selected this year, reflecting excellence in art, public affairs, medicine, education, sports, social work and civil services. Among the most notable names are veteran actor Dharmendra and former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren, both set to be honoured posthumously, adding a moment of remembrance to the national celebrations.

Padma Awards 2026 Announced Ahead Of Republic Day

The Padma Awards, among India’s highest civilian honours, are announced annually on the eve of Republic Day. For 2026, the honours include five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri awards. These distinctions acknowledge exceptional and distinguished service as well as sustained contributions across a wide spectrum of professional and social domains.

The awards underline the importance of both national prominence and grassroots impact, recognising individuals whose work has influenced society over decades as well as those who have quietly served communities with dedication.


Posthumous Honours For Dharmendra And Shibu Soren

Legendary film actor Dharmendra Singh Deol has been selected for the Padma Vibhushan in the field of art. He passed away on November 24, and the honour recognises his enduring legacy in Indian cinema and popular culture.

Former Jharkhand chief minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founder Shibu Soren will be conferred the Padma Bhushan posthumously in the category of public affairs. He died on August 4 last year, and his political journey remains closely associated with tribal rights and regional leadership.


Overall, 16 Padma awards in 2026 will be awarded posthumously, reflecting the lasting impact of individuals whose contributions continue to resonate.

Representation Across Fields And Regions

The 2026 Padma Awards list includes achievers from art, social work, medicine, science and engineering, literature and education, sports, trade and industry, and civil services. Of the total awardees, 19 are women, while six belong to the categories of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and OCIs, highlighting India’s global engagement.

The honours celebrate diversity in service, from nationally recognised figures to individuals whose work has strengthened institutions, preserved traditions, and uplifted communities.
