Ration Card Users To Get Mustard Oil ₹7 Cheaper This Month, Big Relief For Families

Household budgets tied to the public distribution system in Himachal Pradesh are set to get some breathing space this month as the state rolls out a revised ration package for April. The biggest relief comes in the edible oil basket, where mustard oil has become cheaper and refined oil has re-entered fair price shop shelves after months of disruption. For lakhs of families dependent on subsidised essentials, the move is expected to reduce pressure on monthly grocery spending while improving access to commodities that had become difficult to source through the ration network.

Edible Oil Basket Sees A Mixed Reset

This month’s ration cycle introduces a notable change in cooking oil rates.

Mustard oil has been reduced to ₹153 per litre, bringing a small but useful saving compared with last month’s ₹160 price. For families that purchase oil regularly through the public distribution system, even this marginal cut can make a difference over repeated monthly purchases.

At the same time, refined oil has finally returned to the distribution chain after a prolonged absence. While the resumed supply comes at ₹135 per litre, higher than the earlier ₹125 level, the restoration is likely to be seen as a major relief because many households had been forced to buy from the open market at higher retail prices.

Supply Normalisation After Months Of Disruption

The return of refined oil is perhaps the most significant operational change in this month’s distribution cycle.

For around seven months, ration card holders across the state had struggled to access refined oil from fair price shops due to procurement and tender-related delays. The fresh supply order placed after the latest tender process appears to have resolved the immediate shortage, allowing stocks to reach district outlets once again.

This marks an important step in restoring normal commodity flow under the state’s public distribution network.

Grain Allocation Tweaked For APL Families

Alongside edible oils, grain entitlement has also been adjusted for APL households.

Families in this category are scheduled to receive 12 kg of flour this month at ₹12 per family, a slight increase from the previous month’s allocation. Each household will also continue receiving 6 kg of rice at ₹13.

These periodic adjustments often reflect stock balancing and procurement cycles, but for beneficiaries the key takeaway is continued access to low-cost staples amid broader food inflation.

Free Ration Support Continues For Priority Households

The welfare support under NFSA and other priority categories remains unchanged, ensuring continuity for the most vulnerable groups.

Families covered under NFSA, BPL, PHH and Antyodaya categories will continue receiving 35 kg of grain free of cost this month. The allocation includes wheat flour and rice, ensuring that basic food security remains protected for households most dependent on the scheme.

This uninterrupted continuation of free grain support remains one of the strongest pillars of the state’s food welfare system.

Kangra Among Key Beneficiary Districts

District-level distribution has already started showing the impact of the restored supply chain.

Kangra, one of the state’s largest beneficiary districts, is expected to see significant relief as refined oil stocks have reached fair price outlets. With more than 4.68 lakh ration card-holding families in the district alone, the restored availability is likely to ease demand pressure quickly.

The April ration cycle, therefore, signals not just a price revision but a broader stabilisation of essential commodity access for Himachal Pradesh’s ration-dependent households.
