School Winter Break 2026 Extended Till Jan 15 For Nursery To Class 8, Check State-Wise Dates

A harsh cold wave has tightened its grip across large parts of the country, making daily life increasingly difficult. Dense to very dense fog, icy winds and plunging temperatures have affected visibility, travel and normal routines. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for Northwest, Central, East and Northeast India, warning people to remain cautious as severe winter conditions continue.

Cold Wave Forces School Closures

With the cold intensifying, several state governments have extended winter vacations to protect students, especially younger children. Schools across multiple states have either remained shut or seen their holidays extended in response to the weather conditions.

Uttar Pradesh Extends Winter Break

In Uttar Pradesh, schools from nursery to class 8 will remain closed until January 15. Classes 9 to 12, however, will reopen earlier on January 8. The order applies to all schools affiliated with CBSE, ICSE and the UP Board. Authorities have made it clear that strict action will be taken against any institution that violates the directive.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier ordered all schools and colleges up to the intermediate level to remain closed until January 5. As the cold wave worsened, fresh instructions were issued to extend closures for primary and middle classes. In districts like Gorakhpur and Lucknow, local administrations have also announced additional closures due to extreme cold and fog.

Punjab Winter Vacation Extended

Punjab has also extended winter holidays for schools until January 8. The decision was taken by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, keeping student safety in mind as cold conditions continue across the state.

Rajasthan and Kashmir Updates

In Rajasthan, schools have remained closed until January 5 due to the cold wave. In Jaipur, Anganwadi centres will stay shut from January 2 to January 10 as temperatures dip further.

Meanwhile, the Kashmir Valley has announced one of the longest winter breaks. Pre-primary classes will remain closed from November 26 to February 28, 2026. Classes 1 to 8 will be shut from December 1 to February 28, while classes 9 to 12 will operate between December 11 and February 22, 2026.

What to Expect Next
With IMD warnings still in place, more extensions remain possible if temperatures continue to fall. Parents and students are advised to stay updated with official announcements and follow safety guidelines during the ongoing cold wave.
