Shivraj Patil, Former Union Home Minister, Passes Away at 90

Veteran Congress leader and one of India’s most experienced parliamentarians, Shivraj Patil , has passed away at the age of 90. He died at his home in Latur, Maharashtra, after a brief illness, his family confirmed.

Patil’s political journey spanned decades, marking him as a key figure in national governance. A seven-time MP from Latur, he held several major roles during his long career. He served as Lok Sabha Speaker and worked in various Union ministries under Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and later under the UPA government. His tenure as Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008 remains one of his most recognised responsibilities.

His rise in public life began in Maharashtra, where he first served as the president of Latur municipality in the late 1960s. He went on to become an MLA, Deputy Speaker, and Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, earning admiration for his composed leadership and deep understanding of legislative procedures. Over the years, he transitioned smoothly into national politics, chairing several committees and leading crucial parliamentary groups.

Patil continued to serve the nation even after his parliamentary career, taking on the role of Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh between 2010 and 2015. His contributions extended beyond politics through his autobiography, Odyssey of My Life, where he reflected on India’s developments in education and technology and recounted significant events, including the Kandahar hijack.


Shivraj Patil leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service, thoughtful leadership, and an influential presence in India’s political history.
