Coimbatore South Constituency Profile: A Key Urban Electoral Battleground in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 : A fierce contest unfolds in the ‘Manchester of the South’ as AIADMK tries to reclaim its throne from BJP which it lost back in 2021 along with DMK giving it a strong contention for it, making it one of the hottest seats in Tamil Nadu. Known for being a litmus test for shifts in political dynamics which are usually seen having razor thin margins of victory. Currently DMK with V. Senrthil Balaji and AIADMK with Amman K. Arjunan is in a strong contention for this seat, there is a strong presence of other parties too like NTK and TVK. Apart from being politically significant it is one of the most economically significant constituencies of Tamil Nadu too. It is classified as an urban constituency which is also referred to as ‘the Manchester of south India’ due to it being a major industrial hub. Coimbatore has a strong base of textile industries, micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) and is also a big IT hub too.
Coimbatore was restructured after the 2008 delimitation which led to Coimbatore South’s formation and it has a very diverse voter bank consisting of youth, service professionals and businessmen. What makes it hot is the fact that BJP historically has a meaningful electoral presence here along with other Dravidian parties. Currently the main fight is between AIADMK and the DMK parties along with TVK and NTK not being far behind.
The constituency has seen significant changes in its electoral size over recent electoral cycles. As per the latest 2026 rolls. It has approximately 1,86,000 registered voters including 90,000 male voters and 96,000 female voters.
When compared to 2021 elections, the voter bank has reduced substantially from over 2,50,000 to less than 2 lacs. It can be attributed to largely data purification and electoral roll revision. However, despite the reduced vote bank, the electoral turnout has remained extremely high.
The Coimbatore south constituency has been one of the most closely contested constituencies in recent Tamil Nadu politics. In the 2021 assembly elections, Vanathi Srinivasan of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured victory with 53,209 votes over Kamal Hassan of Makal Needi Maiam who received 51,481 votes. The narrow margin of 1728 votes highlighted the intense competition along with the constituency’s volatile voting behaviour.
Earlier in 2016, the seat was won by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, showing that the constituency frequently changes political allegiance. Right now, V. Senthil Balaji of DMK party along with Amman of AIADMK are the strong contenders of 2026 assembly elections.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections were held on 23rd April 2026 with results to be declared on May 4th, 2026. The election recorded a voter turnout of 84.69%. The voting was conducted in a single phase throughout Tamil Nadu.
