Telangana: Muslim father-son duo attacked over beef sale during Hanuman Jayanti

Hyderabad: An angry Hindutva mob allegedly assaulted a 60-year-old Muslim man and his teenage son on Wednesday, April 1, for reportedly selling beef during Hanuman Jayanti in Telangana’s Jagtial district.

The attack took place in Varshakonda village under the jurisdiction of Ibrahimpatnam police station in Metpally town.

Mohammed Qureshi and his 16-year-old son, Mohammed Anas, sell meat, including beef, to the village. “The meat is procured from Nizamabad. In fact, they sold some a day before the incident, and no one had any objection,” police said.

Dressed in saffron attire, a group of 15-20 attacked the father-son duo in Varshakonda village under the jurisdiction of Ibrahimpatnam police station in Metpally town.

Video shows brutal, humiliating assault

Videos circulating online show a group of 15-20 saffron-clad people dragging Anas, while a member shouts, “Take off his clothes.” His father, Qureshi, was repeatedly beaten and kicked to the ground.

In another clip, both victims’ clothes are torn and a member pulls on Anas’s hair, demanding he open the package to prove they’re selling beef.

(Do you think we will let you sell anything?),” the person asks Anas and punches him.

When both Anas and Qureshi are squatting down showing the meat, the group chants “Jai Shri Ram” with fervour and “Jai Shivaji.”

Meanwhile, a person tells the group, “Don’t be too harsh, they might die. Don’t leave any marks.”

A different video shows Anas tied to a pole as his injured father stands beside him while the villagers witness the public assault. In front of the police, the group shouts, “We will raise the saffron flag! Khabardar, khabardar

(beware, beware).”

Investigation underway

Speaking to Siasat.com, the Metpally town Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) confirmed the assault and said an investigation is underway to determine the full facts of the case.

“A case is booked. We are in the middle of inquiring. There was an argument and attack due to the sale of beef on Hanuman Jayanti,” the SDPO said.

The victims were taken to the hospital for treatment and have since been discharged, he added.

Separately, the Ibrahimpatnam Station House Officer said that four to five people have been identified. “The police are inspecting the video to identify the others. There were over 15 people involved. Investigation is underway,” he said.

Although Telangana has relatively steered clear of communal incidents, the state has seen a sharp rise in hate crime incidents against Muslims since the start of 2026, raising questions of widespread Islamophobic rhetoric in the country.
