At present, PNG adoption is still in a developing stage in India, with around 16 million active connections nationwide. However, the distribution is uneven, with a few states accounting for the majority of users.

Maharashtra Leads PNG Adoption

Maharashtra stands at the top with the highest number of PNG connections in the country, accounting for nearly 26% of the total share. The state alone has about 16 million connections, making it the largest consumer base for piped gas.

Following Maharashtra, Gujarat holds the second position with approximately 3.78 million PNG connections. Uttar Pradesh comes in third, with over 2.12 million households connected to PNG networks.

Delhi and Other Key States

The national capital Delhi ranks fourth, with around 1.87 million PNG connections. Karnataka follows in fifth place, with about 5.6 lakh connections.
Other states contributing to PNG growth include:
  • Haryana - 5.6 lakh
  • Rajasthan - 4.7 lakh
  • Madhya Pradesh - 3.2 lakh
  • Andhra Pradesh - 2.9 lakh
  • Bihar - 2.7 lakh

Rapid Monthly Growth in PNG Users

Government data indicates strong recent momentum in adoption. In just one month, around 8 lakh new consumers were added to the PNG network. At the same time, more than 16,000 LPG connections were voluntarily surrendered as users switched to piped gas.

Authorities also noted that households with PNG access will not continue receiving LPG cylinders, reinforcing the shift toward pipeline-based supply.

With infrastructure expanding and more consumers joining the network, PNG is steadily emerging as a key part of India’s domestic energy transition.
