Amid ongoing LPG supply challenges linked to tensions in West Asia, the government is accelerating efforts to expand the use of piped natural gas (PNG) across the country. The move aims to reduce dependence on LPG cylinders and promote a more stable and continuous fuel supply for households.
At present, PNG adoption is still in a developing stage in India, with around 16 million active connections nationwide. However, the distribution is uneven, with a few states accounting for the majority of users.

Maharashtra stands at the top with the highest number of PNG connections in the country, accounting for nearly 26% of the total share. The state alone has about 16 million connections, making it the largest consumer base for piped gas.
