The inaugural service is scheduled to be introduced on 17 January, 2026, marking a new chapter in India’s indigenous rail manufacturing and service delivery. This launch is expected to draw significant attention as it expands the Vande Bharat brand into long-haul sleeper travel for the first time.

Faster Journeys With Overnight Convenience

One of the standout features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is its reduced travel time. The train will cover the entire distance in just 14 hours, compared to the 16 to 17 hours taken by existing express services on the same route. This results in a time saving of nearly three hours, offering greater efficiency for both leisure and business travellers.

The schedule has been planned for overnight convenience. Trains departing from either Howrah or Kamakhya in the evening will arrive at their destination the following morning, allowing passengers to rest comfortably through the night and make full use of the next day.

Modern Sleeper Comfort On Board

Built with modern rail technology, the sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat train is expected to deliver enhanced comfort for long-distance journeys. The focus is on providing a smooth ride, modern interiors and a restful sleeping environment suited to overnight travel.

Passengers can expect a blend of speed and comfort that aligns with the evolving expectations of Indian rail users, particularly those seeking a premium yet practical travel option for inter-state journeys.

Local Cuisine Adds A Cultural Touch

A unique highlight of the Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is its emphasis on regional food experiences. The onboard catering will reflect local culinary traditions, adding a personal and cultural dimension to the journey.

Passengers travelling on services departing from Kamakhya will be served flavours inspired by Assamese cuisine, while those boarding from Howrah will enjoy dishes rooted in Bengal’s food culture. This thoughtful approach aims to give travellers a taste of regional identity while on the move.

Home-Like Experience For Passengers

Food plays an important role in making long journeys comfortable, and the inclusion of familiar regional dishes is expected to create a home-like atmosphere onboard. Both West Bengal and Assam are known for their everyday cuisine, and bringing these flavours to the train enhances the emotional connect for passengers.

This blend of modern rail technology with traditional food culture reflects a broader effort to make train travel not just faster, but also more meaningful and enjoyable.

A Step Forward For Indian Rail Travel

The introduction of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train signals a shift towards upgrading overnight rail services in India. By combining reduced travel time, sleeper comfort and local cultural elements, the new service sets a benchmark for future long-distance trains.

As the Howrah–Kamakhya route prepares to welcome this modern sleeper service, passengers can look forward to a journey that balances speed, comfort and regional warmth in a single experience.
