The Virugampakkam seat saw Sabarinathan R of TMK winning in the 2026 assembly elections. He won by a margin of 27,086 votes against DMK 's candidate Prabhakara Raja A M V, earning a total of 76,092 votes in the high-stakes battle.

The 2021 election saw A. M. V. Prabhakara Raja (DMK) secured a decisive win with 74,351 votes (44.4% vote share), defeating Virugai V. N. Ravi ( AIADMK ), who polled 55,984 votes. The victory margin was 18,367 votes. In the 2016 election, the seat was won by V. N. Virugai Ravi (AIADMK), who polled 65,979 votes, defeating the DMK's K. Thanasekaran by a margin of 2,333 votes.

The voter turnout this year was 85.10%, which is a major jump in comparison to 57.44% of the 2021 elections.

Virugampakkam (Constituency No. 22), located in South-Western Chennai, is a fast-developing urban segment famous for its deep ties to the Tamil film industry. Landmarks like the Koyambedu Wholesale Market—one of Asia's largest—the CMBT bus terminus, and numerous film studios define its identity. A socially diverse electorate, ranging from middle-class residential colonies in K. K. Nagar to the bustling trading communities of Koyambedu, makes it a vital hub for Chennai's commercial and cultural life.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
