Nandigram constituency assembly is one of the most intense battlegrounds currently in Bengal politics. It is not because of just mere electoral competition but the symbolism it carries . At the center of this hot seat is a high stakes deep political rivalry between Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari . Their relationship was once defined by collaboration in the 2007 anti land acquisition movement which recently turned into one of the most bitter rivalries lately with Adhikari shifting to Bharatiya Janata Party from Trinamool Congress in 2021.His subsequent victory in 2021 added another layer of extraordinary drama shifting the seat from just another one to a symbol of political prestige. The voting started on April 23 and results would be announced on May 4. In the previous election in Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari secured victory as a candidate from BJP. What makes it interesting?

The Nandigram seat is made even more interesting with the aspect of hyper local political networks which operate beneath the surface of party structures. Electoral outcomes are not just defined by how popular your party is but by intricate grassroot connections, where local leaders, booth workers and community influencers hold significant sway over voter connections. Adhikari’s lasting impact in this constituency can largely be attributed to the network he built here over the years while being part of TMC. A network that is helping him even after his shift to BJP. This makes the contest less about party influence and more about individual credibility.

At the same time the battle is shaped by two competing ideologies and visions related to Bengal. The TMC continues to emphasize on welfare schemes, rural development initiative and a strong sense of regional identity while the BJP, on the other hand focuses on law and order, governance and on political change angles more. What distinguishes Nandigram from other constituencies is the memory of the 2007 protests which are still freshly engraved into the public’s minds and both the parties attempt to align themselves with that to strengthen their appeal.

The high stakes involved also is shown in the heightened political mobilisation and scrutiny. Elections here often see heavy deployment of security forces, aggressive campaigns from both the leaders and a few allegations of wrongdoings from both sides.

Ultimately, the hot seat of Nandigram would be a prized possession for both parties and both Mamata and Suvendu would try their best to get their hands on the seat even if it means they have to get their hands dirty for it.
