How does Lactoferrin tablet cure dry eyes?

How Lactoferrin Tablets Help Treat Dry Eyes: Nowadays, people are experiencing eye problems at a young age. This problem is increasing due to the use of mobile phones, laptops, and televisions. Following encouraging results from a trial conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, scientists are now preparing to introduce a new drug to the market to treat dry eyes. This drug is based on the milk protein lactoferrin, specifically developed to maintain eye moisture and reduce inflammation.

How has it been prepared?

In fact, this tablet is made from lactoferrin protein derived from cow's colostrum, also known as the first milk. Colostrum is considered a treasure trove of nutrients and bioactive compounds that help repair the body and boost immunity. According to Dr. Sujata Sharma, a scientist involved in this research, a partnership has been formed with a Japanese company to develop this drug. The research paper based on this trial is currently under review for publication in a scientific journal.

Dry eye problem

Dry eye is a common but troublesome problem that occurs when the eyes don't produce enough tears or their quality is poor. This causes irritation, redness, and heaviness. The habit of looking at screens for extended periods of time is exacerbating this problem, as it significantly reduces blinking. In this trial conducted on approximately 200 patients at AIIMS's RP Center, led by senior eye expert Dr. Namrata Sharma, patients were given 250 mg of lactoferrin daily for three months.

What improvement did this bring?

This improved both the ability and quality of tears in patients' eyes. Currently, most people resort to eye drops or sometimes steroids to treat dry eye, but these provide only temporary relief and can have side effects. This new lactoferrin-based therapy offers a safe, effective, and cost-effective alternative.

What is lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin is a natural protein that helps boost immunity, reduce inflammation, and repair cells. This is why scientists are now researching its other uses, such as treating anemia. Initially, attempts were made to extract this protein from human milk, but due to limited availability and ethical concerns, this was not possible. Cow colostrum was subsequently adopted as an effective and accessible alternative. Currently, researchers hope that, after receiving the necessary approvals, this drug will soon be available on the market, providing relief to millions of people suffering from dry eye.
