Android 16 Beta Introduces Live Updates for Smarter, Pinable Notifications
Google may have only recently launched Android 15, but it’s already moving forward with its next big update. The company has begun rolling out Android 16 Beta 1 for supported Pixel devices, bringing several enhancements, including improved UI elements and a new notification feature called Live Updates .
One of the most notable additions, Live Updates, allows users to pin ongoing notifications for quick access. This feature works similarly to Apple’s Live Activities, which keeps users informed about real-time events like flight status, ride progress, and delivery tracking. With Android 16, developers can now create dynamic, persistent notifications that provide continuous updates.
According to Android Authority, Live Updates will also integrate into the lock screen, appearing as part of a new compact notification shelf. This shelf groups notifications for a cleaner display. However, Google isn’t enforcing this layout by default, so users may need to enable it manually.
The report further suggests that Live Update notifications will also be visible on the status bar and could extend to the always-on display—though Google has yet to confirm this officially.
Interestingly, some Android brands, including OnePlus, Oppo, and Realme, have already implemented similar features. Their custom skins allow users to track updates like Zomato order deliveries or Spotify playback controls directly from the notification panel. Now, with Android 16, Google is standardizing this functionality across the platform.
