The Bihar government has announced a major financial relief for state employees and pensioners by increasing the Dearness Allowance (DA) from 58% to 60%. The decision was approved during the first cabinet meeting held after the recent cabinet expansion under Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

The revised DA will come into effect from January 1, 2026, and is expected to benefit nearly 9 lakh government employees and pensioners across the state.

According to officials, the hike will increase monthly salaries and pensions depending on the employee’s pay scale and service category.

The decision was among 18 major proposals cleared during the cabinet meeting and is being viewed as an important step aimed at reducing the impact of rising inflation on fixed-income earners.

Bihar Employees to Receive Higher Salaries After DA Revision

With the latest increase, government employees in Bihar will now receive Dearness Allowance at the rate of 60% of their basic salary.

DA is an additional amount paid to employees and pensioners to help them cope with the rising cost of living and inflation.

Officials stated that the salary increase will vary according to the employee’s basic pay.

Employees earning a minimum basic salary of ₹19,000 are expected to receive an additional ₹390 per month after the DA revision. On the other hand, senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers drawing a basic salary of around ₹2.25 lakh may see their monthly salary rise by nearly ₹4,500.

Pensioners will also benefit from the revised rates. Depending on pension slabs, retired employees may receive an increase ranging from approximately ₹250 to ₹2,200 per month.

First Major Decision After Cabinet Expansion

The DA hike became one of the biggest highlights of the cabinet meeting conducted after the recent expansion of the Bihar government ministry. The meeting reportedly approved 18 important agendas related to governance and employee welfare.

Government employees’ unions and pensioner associations have welcomed the move, saying the increase will provide relief at a time when inflation continues to affect household budgets and essential expenses.

Why Dearness Allowance Matters

Dearness Allowance, commonly known as DA, is a cost-of-living adjustment provided to government employees and pensioners. It is designed to reduce the financial burden caused by inflation and rising prices of goods and services.

Unlike private-sector salary structures, DA is specifically linked to inflation trends and is revised periodically based on economic indicators. The allowance is calculated as a percentage of the employee’s basic salary.

As inflation rises, governments revise DA rates to help maintain the purchasing power of employees and retirees who depend on fixed monthly income.

DA Is Revised Twice Every Year

Both the central and state governments usually revise Dearness Allowance twice annually — once in January and again in July.

The revisions are generally based on inflation data and recommendations linked to consumer price index calculations.

The adjustment ensures that employees’ salaries remain aligned with changing living expenses, especially during periods of rising inflation.

Experts say DA plays an important role in the overall salary structure of government workers because even a small percentage increase can significantly impact take-home salary, especially for employees in higher pay brackets.

Impact on Employees and Pensioners

The latest announcement is expected to improve the monthly income of lakhs of serving employees and retired pensioners in Bihar. Higher DA not only boosts monthly earnings but may also indirectly impact allowances and retirement-related calculations linked to salary structures.

For lower-income staff members, the additional amount can help manage daily expenses such as food, transportation, healthcare, and education costs.

Meanwhile, senior officials and pensioners may see a substantial increase in monthly income due to the revised percentage.

The government’s move comes at a time when several states are revising employee benefits and allowances amid continued inflationary pressure.

What Happens Next?

The revised Dearness Allowance will now be implemented officially from January 2026, and employees are expected to receive the updated amount in upcoming salary cycles.

In some cases, arrears related to previous months may also be processed depending on administrative timelines.

Financial experts believe the decision could increase government expenditure but may also boost consumer spending by improving disposable income for employees and pensioners.

With this announcement, the Bihar government has provided a significant financial boost to its workforce, offering relief to lakhs of families dependent on government salaries and pensions.
