Caution! This cholesterol medication can cause kidney failure! Research on 900,000 people reveals a significant risk

Kidney Problems: Statin drugs are used worldwide to maintain a healthy heart and lower bad cholesterol. One of these is a very popular drug, rosuvastatin. Doctors often prescribe it to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, but recently, researchers at the renowned Johns Hopkins University in the US have made a new discovery. At the heart of this research is the question: is this effective drug inadvertently causing problems for your kidneys? Let’s find out what the research says…

In fact, this concern isn’t new. When the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved this drug years ago, some initial clinical trials showed symptoms like blood and protein in patients’ urine, which are considered early signs of kidney failure. However, this wasn’t thoroughly investigated at the time. Now, researchers have addressed this gap by closely analyzing the health data of nearly 900,000 people, comparing rosuvastatin with another well-known drug, atorvastatin.

The patient may even need dialysis or transplant.

The results of this long study which lasted for three years show that the risk of kidney related complications is comparatively higher in patients taking Rosuvastatin. If we look at the data, then the risk of bleeding through urine i.e. haematuria and the risk of protein in urine i.e. proteinuria was found to be 17 percent higher in those taking this medicine. The most shocking thing was that in those who were taking high dose of this medicine, the risk of serious condition like kidney failure increased by 15 percent, where the patient may even need dialysis or transplant.

Another important aspect of the research is that sometimes high doses of rosuvastatin were being given to patients who already had weak kidneys, which could be risky from a health perspective. On the other hand, interestingly, both rosuvastatin and atorvastatin

have proven to be equally effective in preventing heart disease . Therefore, experts believe that it is crucial to consider a patient’s kidney health when choosing medications. This research warns that as important as controlling cholesterol is, it is equally important that the treatment method does not overwhelm other organs of the body.
