Celebrating Mohini Ekadashi: A Guide to the Sacred Fast
This year, the Mohini Ekadashi, which falls on the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing moon phase) of the month of *Vaishakh*, will be observed in Faridabad with great devotion. This fast, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is regarded as highly auspicious. It is believed that those who observe this fast with genuine intent can alleviate their troubles and fulfill their desires. For first-time observers, understanding the specific rituals and guidelines is crucial.
Mohini Ekadashi Fast Date
According to Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya from the Udaseen Ashram in Ballabhgarh, the Mohini Ekadashi fast will take place on Monday, April 27th. This observance is not just a fast; it serves as a spiritual guide for one's life. Historical accounts mention that even Lord Rama sought guidance from Sage Vashistha regarding a fast that could cleanse sins and provide liberation from suffering, leading to the teachings about Mohini Ekadashi.
The Story Behind Mohini Ekadashi
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya shared a mythological tale about a merchant named Dhanpal, who had five sons. The eldest son fell into bad company and was eventually expelled from home, turning to theft and hunting for survival. By chance, he encountered a sage who awakened his conscience. Seeking redemption, the sage advised him to observe the Mohini Ekadashi fast. Following the rituals of the fast transformed his life completely.
Connection to Lord Vishnu
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya explained that Mohini Ekadashi is closely associated with Lord Vishnu's *Mohini* avatar. During the *Samudra Manthan* (Churning of the Ocean), Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini to distribute the divine nectar (*Amrit*) among the gods. This event has made this Ekadashi particularly significant, as it is believed to cleanse sins and bring happiness and prosperity. The observance of the fast begins on the *Dashami Tithi* (tenth day of the lunar fortnight), where one should consume only *Sattvic* (pure) food once and maintain *Brahmacharya* (celibacy). On Ekadashi, devotees should bathe in the morning and pray to both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. A fruit-based diet is recommended, or one may choose to observe a *Nirjala* (waterless) fast, with permissible fruits including bananas, apples, guavas, and pomegranates, along with dishes made from buckwheat (*Kuttu*).
What to Avoid
During the fast, Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya advises against slander, gossip, and anger. Devotees should chant the mantra of Lord Vishnu: "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" throughout the day. Engaging in *Bhajans* (devotional songs), *Kirtans* (congregational chanting), and *Jagrans* (night vigils) in the evening is considered highly beneficial. On the *Dwadashi* Tithi (twelfth lunar day), worship should be performed according to the prescribed rituals before breaking the fast.
Alleviating Suffering
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya emphasized that this fast presents a unique opportunity for the people of Faridabad. Observing the *Mohini Ekadashi* fast is believed to relieve three types of suffering: *Daivika* (divine), *Adhibhautika* (material), and *Adhyatmika* (spiritual). Those who observe this fast with faith and adherence to the rules are said to invite happiness, peace, and prosperity into their lives.
