In India, Mother’s Day 2026 will be celebrated on Sunday, May 10. Like every year, it falls on the second Sunday of May, turning an ordinary weekend into a meaningful celebration of motherhood.

The History Behind Mother’s Day

The history of Mother’s Day goes back much further than many people realise. Historians often trace its roots to ancient Greek traditions, where maternal figures such as Rhea and Cybele were honoured.

The modern version of Mother’s Day, however, is closely linked to Anna Jarvis. After losing her mother in 1905, she wanted to create a meaningful way to honour her mother’s love and sacrifice. In 1908, she organised the first Mother’s Day gathering, which was more emotional and personal than ceremonial.

A few years later, in 1914, then US President Woodrow Wilson officially recognised Mother’s Day. What started as one daughter’s tribute gradually became a global tradition.
