Why Cleaning Your Matka Is Essential: Matkas are made from natural clay, which contains tiny pores that allow water to cool through evaporation. While this makes them effective, it also means they can absorb impurities, odours, and microorganisms. A new or long-unused pot may contain loose clay particles, kiln residues, or environmental dust. Without proper cleaning, these can contaminate drinking water and pose health risks.

Step 1: Rinse Thoroughly To Remove Dust and Residue
Begin by rinsing the matka several times with clean, room-temperature water. This helps remove loose clay particles and surface dirt from both the inside and outside. Avoid using hot water, as sudden temperature changes can weaken the structure and cause cracks. Make sure the first few rinses are discarded completely.

Step 2: Clean With Safe, Natural Ingredients
Since earthen pots are porous, it’s important to avoid chemical detergents that can seep into the walls and later mix with drinking water. Instead, use natural cleaning agents like baking soda or rock salt mixed with water. Gently scrub the inner surface with a soft brush or cloth. You can also use diluted white vinegar occasionally to help reduce odor and limit microbial growth. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning to ensure no residue is left behind.

Step 3: Soak and Dry Properly Before Use
Once cleaned, fill the matka with clean water and let it soak for 6–12 hours or overnight. This step helps the clay settle and removes any remaining fine particles. After soaking, empty the pot and allow it to air-dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Proper drying prevents moisture buildup, which can otherwise promote bacterial growth.

Always keep the matka covered to protect the water from dust, insects, and pollutants. Use a clean ladle or tap system instead of dipping hands or glasses directly into the pot. Regular cleaning, ideally every 2–3 days, helps maintain hygiene, especially during peak summer when water is refilled frequently.


Avoid placing the matka directly on the floor; instead, keep it on a clean, elevated surface. If you notice any slimy texture, unusual smell, or discoloration, it’s a sign the pot needs immediate cleaning.
