Gold for the Bride, Rings for the Children: Vijay Thalapathy's Promises That Will Make Him Break a Sweat to Fulfill..
Tamil Nadu politics has long been known for its grand and enticing promises; however, the gambit played this time by superstar Vijay's party, 'Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam' (TVK), is quite distinct. They have pledged that whenever a new arrival graces a household, the government will present the newborn with a gold ring. Furthermore, when a daughter gets married, the government itself will provide a ceremonial gift comprising 8 grams of gold and a silk saree.
Tamil Nadu has a population of approximately 77.6 million. Implementing any welfare scheme on such a scale demands substantial financial resources.
According to statistics, the state currently boasts the lowest birth rate in the country; in the year 2025 alone, approximately 780,000 children were born. Under Vijay's proposed scheme, every newborn would be presented with a gold ring. Now, assuming that 60 percent of these births occur within economically weaker families, the government would still be required to distribute these rings to roughly 470,000 children annually. Even if the cost of a small ring is estimated at around ₹5,000, when multiplied by hundreds of thousands of children, this initiative alone translates into an annual expenditure of ₹235 crore. The promise regarding weddings is even more ambitious and financially demanding. Approximately 400,000 to 500,000 weddings take place in Tamil Nadu every year. Vijay's party has pledged that brides from families with an annual income of less than ₹500,000 will receive a gift of 8 grams of gold and a silk saree. Given the significant disparity in income distribution across the state, it is estimated that roughly 60 percent of families could potentially fall within this eligibility bracket.
When we add the cost of a saree—estimated at ₹3,000—to the price of this gold, the government's total expenditure per bride exceeds ₹1,13,680. Now, if we calculate the total for all eligible brides throughout the year, this single scheme alone would impose a burden of approximately ₹3,070 crore on the state exchequer.
However, the story does not end with gold alone, as the TVK has a whole Pandora's box of other major promises in store.
Vijay has also painted a vision of grand aspirations in the fields of education and technology. He has promised collateral-free education loans of up to ₹20 lakh and the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) university. These schemes sound highly modern and progressive; however, the infrastructure and funding required to implement them appear to pose a significant challenge given the current financial situation.
