When it comes to haircare, it can be difficult to find products that are suitable for all hair types. Now, many shoppers, particularly those over 50, are praising a hair thickening shampoo that is said to deliver 'voluminous' locks.

The product in question is the Density Hair Thickening Shampoo for £31 from Philip Kingsley. This price is for a 200ml-sized tube, and it is said to help improve the 'health, condition and quality' of fine, fragile and shedding hair.

The shampoo itself contains hyper-branched polymers and hydrolyzed pea peptides to volumise the hair without causing any dryness, according to the description. With a sulphate-free formula, it can help to restore and strengthen strands 'from deep within the cortex,' while BHAs gently exfoliate the scalp.

The overall result is said to include reduced breakage and a healthy scalp environment. According to those who have used the shampoo before, the brand says they witnessed increased hair volume by 25% after one use when using the Thickening Shampoo, Conditioner and Protein Spray together.

An alternative to this is the Sachajuan Thickening Shampoo (990ml) for £73 from LookFantastic. This one is said to transform flat-looking hair with body and volume to create the illusion of fuller, stronger-looking hair.

For those who want a few products, they could try the Pitta volumising system for £66, down from £72, on Champo. This one includes a Pitta volumising shampoo (260ml), Pitta volumising conditioner (260ml) and a Pitta growth serum (30ml), all of which are part of a targeted system trichologically formulated for fine or thinning hair and hair loss, the brand says.

The Density Hair Thickening Shampoo, however, has garnered a range of high reviews on the Philip Kingsley website. One person said: "I like this product, my hair feels thicker and healthier. I switch between the PK weightless body building shampoo and this one. It does require more product to get a good lather but I understand that's because it's sulphate free."

Another added: "I'm very happy with this shampoo, my hair doesn't feel dry and brittle any more. This shampoo doesn't feel heavy, and also gives my fine hair a boost of body!"

A third person commented: "My hair has been getting finer and thinner as I've got older. I'm in my late fifties now and my previously thick and unruly curlyish hair is noticeably less voluminous than it was. Using this shampoo does seem to give it some of its lost 'oomph' back after every shampoo."

Naturally not every product will be suited to everyone, and some buyers removed a star. One person said: "Certainly makes my thinning hair feel thicker. First application doesn't really build any lather. But second does. Feels like it is not totally clean. But that's probably just me. Smells lovely."

Another added: "I have fine hair, the products are good when used on their own but when I use with the preserving scalp mouse my hair looks greasy and needs washing again."
