‘ Jana Nayagan ’: HC temporarily stays ‘UA’ certificate

The Madras High Court has temporarily stayed a single judge’s order directing the CBFC to issue a ‘UA’ certificate to Vijay’s Jana Nayagan. A Bench led by the Chief Justice observed that the CBFC was not given adequate time to present its case before the earlier order was passed.

The court raised concerns about procedural safeguards under the Cinematograph Act and the sanctity of the Examining Committee’s recommendations. It also noted that no certificate had been granted so far, and fixing a release date without one amounted to undue pressure on the system. The matter has now been posted for the next hearing on January 21, after the Pongal holidays.

‘Toxic’ teaser sparks backlash

The teaser of Yash’s Toxic drew criticism online over a steamy sequence that several viewers termed “objectifying.” The backlash was particularly sharp given that director Geetu Mohandas has previously spoken out against such portrayals in her work.

Reactions were divided on social media, with some users rallying behind the filmmaker while others revisited her earlier comments on Kasaba. The controversy once again brought attention to debates around representation and the portrayal of intimacy in Indian cinema.

Prabhas calls Spirit first look ‘cult’

Prabhas lauded the first-look poster of Spirit, calling it “cult” and one of the best looks of his career. The actor expressed excitement about appearing in a completely new and intense avatar for the upcoming cop action drama.

Released at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day, the poster features Prabhas with long hair, visible stitches on his back and a glass of alcohol in hand. Fans reacted enthusiastically, praising the bold imagery and the Rebel Star’s striking new appearance.

‘ Draupathi 2 ’ set for Pongal release

Filmmaker Mohan G announced Draupathi 2, starring Richard Rishi and Rakshana Induchoodan , with a Pongal release planned. The film is set against the backdrop of the Hoysala Kingdom during the Mughal era and promises a tale rooted in bravery and power.

The trailer is scheduled to be released on the night of January 10, adding to the festive buzz. With its historical setting and polarising legacy, the sequel is already generating attention ahead of the holiday season.

‘Vaa Vaathiyaar’ denied clearance by HC

The long-delayed Karthi starrer Vaa Vaathiyaar, which was being eyed for a Pongal release following the postponement of Jana Nayagan, has been denied clearance by the Madras High Court. A Division Bench ruled that the film cannot be released in theatres, OTT or digital platforms until outstanding dues of Rs 21.78 crore are fully settled.

The court declined partial repayment, noting that sufficient time had already been granted along with repeated commitments. The financial dispute dates back to 2011, when businessman Sunderdas entered into an investment agreement, with unpaid amounts and interest accumulating over the years. With the liability continuing to rise, the High Court’s order has effectively stalled the film’s release, despite significant pre-release buzz.
