People often dismiss this as normal fatigue, but this condition can eventually develop into heat cramps, or muscle pain and cramps caused by heat. This problem is especially common in people who work in the sun, engage in excessive exercise, or lack adequate water intake.

Heat cramps shouldn't be taken lightly, as they can be the first sign of overheating. If left unattended, this condition can progress to more serious illnesses like heat exhaustion or heat stroke. So, let's explore why heat cramps increase in summer and how to protect yourself from them.

What are heat cramps?

Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms caused by overheating and a lack of water and essential minerals (electrolytes). These cramps typically occur in the legs, arms, abdomen, or back. When we sweat excessively, the body loses salt and essential nutrients. This can lead to muscle stiffness and pain.

Why do heat cramps increase in summer?

1. Dehydration - Summer brings on increased sweating. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration. This affects blood circulation and temperature control.

2. Electrolyte deficiency - Elements like sodium, potassium, and calcium are essential for the body. They help muscles and nerves function properly. These elements are lost through sweat, leading to cramps.

3. Excessive physical exertion - Working in the sun, exercising, or doing heavy work tires the body quickly and causes excessive sweating, which increases the risk of cramps.

4. Excessive heat and humidity - If you're in a very hot, enclosed space with poor air circulation, your body can't cool itself properly. This increases your body temperature.

5. Effect of age - Small children and elderly people are affected quickly. The body of children is not able to control the temperature quickly, and in elderly people, sweat is produced less, due to which the body is not able to cool down.

Symptoms of heat cramps

Heat cramps can start gradually or suddenly. Some common symptoms include severe muscle pain or spasms, sudden jerking or pulling, excessive sweating, clammy and red skin, weakness or fatigue, and sometimes a low-grade fever.

How to take care of yourself from heat cramps

1. If you or someone else gets heat cramps, move away from the sun or a hot place to a cool place and give your body rest.

2. Drink cold water, keep wet clothes or a cold compress on the body, and sit near a fan or AC.

3. Drink plenty of water and electrolytes, such as normal water, coconut water, ORS, or sports drinks.

4. Gently stretch the muscle that is painful and give it a light massage.
