How to Address Unfair LPG Charges in Restaurants: A Guide for Consumers
The ongoing unrest in the Middle East is noticeably affecting India, leading to gas shortages that have forced some restaurants and roadside eateries, known as *dhabas*, to close. Many others are struggling to secure gas cylinder bookings. In response to these challenges, the Central Government released an advisory for hotels and restaurants on Wednesday.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has mandated that hotels and restaurants cannot automatically impose charges like 'LPG Charge,' 'Gas Surcharge,' 'Fuel Cost Recovery,' or any similar fees on customer bills. It is essential that the prices listed on menus reflect the total amount payable, excluding only applicable taxes. In light of this, we will outline how customers can report any establishment that adds unauthorized charges to their bills.
Request the Manager to Remove the Charge
If you notice an LPG charge or gas surcharge on your bill, first approach the restaurant or hotel manager and request the removal of this charge. Make them aware of the CCPA's clear guidelines against such automatic fees.
File a Complaint with the National Consumer Helpline
If the manager declines to remove the charge, you can escalate the issue by contacting the National Consumer Helpline (NCH). You can reach them by calling 1915, using the NCH mobile app, or the UMANG app. Additionally, complaints can be sent via WhatsApp to +91 8800001915.
E-Jagriti Portal
For a more formal approach, you can file a complaint with the relevant Consumer Commission through the 'E-Jagriti' portal. Alternatively, you may send a written complaint to your local District Collector or directly to the CCPA.
