KATSEYE's Yoonchae's reaction to question about 'gays' sparks debate; Netizens share mixed reactions over response

Global pop group KATSEYE recently took over the VMAs when they attended the award show in style on the red carpet. Not only that, but the group even had the chance to perform their hit song ‘Gnarly’ on stage as well, all the while winning an award too! During the interviews on the red carpet, the girls were seen answering questions together. One of the interviewer’s questions, however, sparked a response in one of the members, Yoonchae , as she did not say anything. The incident’s video was shared online and has since then sparked a lot of debate as well.

The group attended the VMAs on September 7, where they performed their viral hit ‘Gnarly’ and even won an award. During the interviews at the red carpet, one of the interviewers ended up asking them a question that prompted an unexpected reaction from Yoonchae, which shocked fans.


The interviewer had asked the group about what message do they have for their gay fans. The group had all enthusiastically replied by saying “WE LOVE THE GAYS”, however only Yoonchae had not partaken in the move as per the video, sparking mixed reactions online.

While some fans and netizens defended her, citing that she may not have understood the message as English is not her first language, many other called her out for being discriminatory.

Some fans commented about the singer being homophobic and discriminatory, while others stood by her side. One comment read that, “Oh, I know Yoonchae was saying the nastiest slur in her head”, while another read, “yoonchae never beating the koreans are homophobic statement HDIFKFKKDKSK”.



Another comment read, “Chill on yoonchip yall she might not have understood the question. English isn’t her first language”, while one more shared that, “It's so funny to me when people try to start homophobic allegations on any of them when they are literally one of the groups that (EVERY MEMBER) openly support the lgbt+ community the most, not to mention TWO OF THEM ARE PART OF THE LGBT+ COMMUNITY”.
