Major Update from UIDAI: Aadhaar Will No Longer Serve as Proof of Date of Birth—Find Out Why This Step Was Taken...

Newspoint

Aadhaar Identity: An important update has emerged for users of the Aadhaar card. The UIDAI has clarified that the Aadhaar card should no longer be considered official proof of Date of Birth (DOB). However, the document will remain valid as proof of identity and address. This information came to light through an official letter sent by the UIDAI to Aadhaar User Agencies (AUAs) and e-KYC User Agencies (KUAs). This letter provides clarity regarding the usage and limitations of Aadhaar.

Why will it not be accepted as proof of Date of Birth?

According to the UIDAI, the primary objective of Aadhaar is to establish an individual's identity, not to verify their date of birth. The date of birth recorded in Aadhaar is based on the information provided by the individual during the enrollment or update process. In many instances, this information is recorded based on supporting documents; however, in cases where no such proof is available, the date of birth may be recorded as either "estimated" or "declared." In such cases, only the year of birth is captured, and the system automatically records January 1st of that year as the default date of birth. This is the reason why it cannot be accepted as proof of date of birth.

Confirmation of Identity Only

The UIDAI has also clarified that the Aadhaar card serves solely to confirm that the individual presenting the document is indeed the same person who originally registered with their biometric and other details. During the Aadhaar authentication process, the data is matched against the central database, thereby confirming the individual's identity. However, this process does not involve the verification of other details, such as the date of birth.

Discretion Granted to Agencies

The UIDAI has further stated that AUAs and KUAs have the discretion to decide, based on their own requirements, whether or not they wish to utilize Aadhaar for purposes related to dates of birth. Furthermore, decisions regarding the use of Aadhaar in welfare schemes, subsidies, and other government services are taken by the respective ministries, state governments, and other relevant institutions. Valid for Proof of Identity and Address

According to UIDAI, all formats of the Aadhaar card are valid as proof of identity and address. However, it is mandatory to adhere to the prescribed conditions. The formats of the Aadhaar card include the Physical Card, e-Aadhaar, Masked Aadhaar, Offline XML, and QR Code.
