Nestle NAN Baby Formula Recall: Food and beverage giant Nestle on Tuesday announced the recall of some of its key baby nutrition products. The company stated that these products may contain a toxin that can cause vomiting and nausea in babies.
The products recalled include infant and follow-on formulas under the SMA, BEBA, and NAN brands. These products are primarily sold in Europe, although the BBC reports that Nestlé officials have issued recalls wherever they are sold worldwide.
What did the company say?
The company told Reuters that the decision was made after a quality issue was identified with an ingredient from a major supplier. Following this, Nestlé initiated an investigation into the arachidonic acid oil and related oil blends used in all affected infant nutrition products.
Nestlé clarified that no illnesses or symptoms have been confirmed to be linked to any of the recalled products. The company also stated that the recall, which began on a limited scale in December, is now being expanded to a larger scale. According to the Austrian Ministry of Health, this recall affects more than 800 products manufactured in more than 10 Nestlé factories. This is being described as the largest product recall in the company's history.

How to identify the affected batch?
Nestlé has released a list of batch numbers sold in different countries that should not be consumed. The company said it is working to mitigate any supply disruptions.
Customers are advised to check the code on the bottom of the box or pack for powdered formula, while for ready-to-feed formula, check the code on the side or top of the outer box and container.
Why was the recall done?
Nestlé has recalled these products in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, and the UK due to the potential presence of a toxin called cereulide, which is produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria.
According to the UK Food Standards Agency, this toxin is not destroyed by cooking, boiling, or other processes like milk preparation. If consumed, it can quickly cause symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and stomach cramps. Meanwhile, the Norwegian Food Safety Agency has stated that it poses no immediate serious health risk.
