What a Myocardial Infarction actually is
Myocardial infarction is the medical term for a heart attack. Basically, it's when blood flow to your heart gets blocked, usually by a blood clot or plaque buildup in an artery. Your heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen, and that causes damage. Sometimes it's massive and fatal. Sometimes people survive it and spend the rest of their lives managing the aftermath. It depends on a lot of factors, which artery's blocked, how much of the heart's affected, how quickly someone gets medical help.

The reality of heart attacks
What's sobering about Muldoon's death is that heart attacks are actually really common. They're one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and they don't discriminate. They happen to people who seem healthy. They happen to people who exercise. They happen to people who eat right. Sometimes the risk factors are obvious, smoking, obesity, family history, high cholesterol. Sometimes they're hidden, things nobody knew about until it was too late.

Muldoon was 56. He was working. He had a life. And a myocardial infarction ended it. That's the reality of heart disease—it doesn't care about your career or your plans or how much people liked you. It just happens.
