Penhaligons set has five fragrances for £10 each and they're perfect for summer holidays
If you're even a little bit fragrance-obsessed, chances are you're already well acquainted with Penhaligon's - the luxury British perfume house that's been bottling perfumes since the 1870s. It's a brand steeped in heritage, with four Royal Warrants and even a scent created alongside King Charles himself (the Highgrove Bouquet Eau de Parfum was inspired by the gardens at Highgrove and brought to life in partnership with The King's Foundation).
Of course, that kind of royal seal of approval doesn't come cheap. Entry-level scents hover around £145, while some of the more opulent bottles climb to a lofty £250. But there's a clever little workaround if you want to dabble without committing to a full-size splurge.
Enter the discovery sets. For just £50, you can get your hands on five of the brand's classic fragrances, a bit of a steal when you consider their full price. And they're perfect for spring and summer getaways. There are a few options floating around, but the two £50 collections (one for women, one for men) are arguably the best bang for your buck.
Each set includes five beautifully presented 5ml miniatures modelled to look like dainty versions of their larger counterparts, with the line-up varying slightly depending on which set you choose.
The Ladies' Fragrance Collection is particularly charming, featuring dainty versions of the brand's signature bottles. At just £10 a pop, you can explore five iconic scents: The Favourite, Elisabethan Rose, Empressa, Halfeti and Luna.
And because they're all 5ml, they're perfectly sized for slipping into your toiletries bag or carry-on (no stressful airport liquid decanting required). They're equally handy for keeping in your handbag for quick, on-the-go spritzes.
To put the value into perspective, full-size bottles of The Favourite, Elisabethan Rose and Luna will set you back £175 each, while Empressa and Halfeti climb to £215 for 100ml.
The Favourite opens with violet leaf, mimosa and musk, described as a soft and powdery scent. One reviewer put it perfectly: "There's delicate floral, wrapped in gentle Musk that gives this very feminine scent a maturity that will suit day or evening wear. This fragrance has an effect on my confidence that mirrors putting on my favourite dress."
Elisabethan Rose is exactly what you'd hope for from the name: a romantic floral inspired by England's Tudor Rose, with subtle twists of hazelnut leaf and vetiver adding depth.
Empressa leans into something richer and more decadent, with patchouli, bergamot and peach at its heart. It has an impressive 4.5-star rating, with one happy customer writing: "A beautiful eau de parfum with a fabulous sweet, floral scent with a wonderful warm undertone of amber, musk and sandalwood. I love it and found it lasted most of the day before I needed a light top-up. Suitable for day or night. Although it does have a high price tag, you do get what you pay for, and this is an amazing quality fragrance."
Halfeti - one of the house's more luxurious creations - blends grapefruit, oud, Levantine spice and rose into something bold and memorable. Though it appears in the women's edit, it's unisex.
Finally, Luna rounds things off with a bright, airy floral profile, led by jasmine and lifted with fir balsam and bergamot.
Over on the Gentlemen's side, the collection arrives in the same sleek presentation box, housing five classic scents in miniature form: Quercus, Blenheim Bouquet, Endymion, Halfeti and Juniper Sling.
Quercus is a warm citrus number that feels tailor-made for summer. A 30ml bottle comes in at £65, while a 100ml bottle will set you back £145. One reviewer said: "Penhaligon's Quercus is a beautifully balanced fragrance that captures freshness without ever feeling overwhelming."
Blenheim Bouquet has serious heritage credentials - originally created for the 9th Duke of Marlborough - and combines lemon, black pepper and pine for something crisp and unmistakably classic. A 100ml bottle costs £145.
Endymion brings a slightly moodier energy, blending sweet notes with citrus and spice, anchored by a distinctly masculine hint of leather.
Rounding things off are Halfeti (making a second appearance) and Juniper Sling: a lively, fresh scent with juniper berry and black pepper at its core. It's one of the pricier options in the line-up, with 30ml retailing at £90 and 100ml reaching £180.
All in all, if you've been eyeing up Penhaligon's but dettered by the price tags, these discovery sets are a brilliantly low-commitment way to explore the range and find a signature scent (or five) along the way.
