Who is Punch?
Punch, a Japanese macaque born in July 2025 at Ichikawa City Zoological & Botanical Garden, went viral for clinging to a stuffed orangutan toy. Abandoned by his mother, he struggled to bond with peers, using the plush for comfort and to learn clinging, which is an important skill for baby macaques. Zookeepers hand-raised him after rejection from fellow monkeys.

Punch now has a ‘girlfriend’
Newly surfaced social media videos show Punch playing, cuddling, and "kissing" a female macaque named Momo-chan . The pair jumps, chases tails, and grooms, with Punch's toy also appearing in clips. Punch now gets along better with the troop, clutching his toy less.

According to AOL article, Zoo director Shigekazu Mizushina explained its purpose, "When he grows out of the plush toy that encourages his independence, and that's what we are hoping for". Not bullied, but adapting slowly, as clarified by staff.

Social media goes ga-ga over his newly formed friendship
Viewers adore the duo's playful behaviour. One X post wrote, "'Punch found a girlfriend, and you're still single,'" while another said Momo-chan's colour matched the toy. Some videos also show them sitting in such a way that it "creates the impression of a 'kiss,'" with Momo playfully tugging Punch's tail before hugs.

With Momo-chan now by his side, Punch's journey has taken a truly uplifting turn. From his days of viral solitude to joyful play and bonding, this young macaque's story has become popular among fans, showing that even in the animal kingdom, companionship and better days can emerge over time.
