During a conversation with Vanity Fair at the Toronto International Film Festival, the veteran star explained the deeper philosophy behind his character in the film ‘Youth’.

Caine played a retired composer looking back at life and said, “Well for me, it was a thing of if you look at the film… and you're young, the character says don't be afraid. You know? It's gonna be alright when you get there, but you can live happily with unhappiness.” He continued, “And you can live to be old, if you're lucky. The alternative to being old is to be dead, you know?”

According to him, the idea highlights a universal truth about growing older. Life isn’t perfect, but people can still find meaning in it, despite all the disappointments.
