Railways: Big News for Rail Passengers! Rules for Cancelling Train Tickets Have Changed..
The Railways have revised the rules regarding the cancellation of confirmed tickets. Now, the amount deducted will depend on *when* you cancel the ticket. A 50% deduction will apply if the ticket is cancelled between 8 and 24 hours before departure, whereas a 25% deduction will be applicable for cancellations made between 24 and 72 hours in advance. For cancellations made more than 72 hours before departure, a standard refund will be issued in accordance with the previous rules. Furthermore, offline tickets can now be cancelled from any location; previously, this facility was available only at the terminating station. Additionally, you can update your travel details up to 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure. All these changes are set to come into effect between April 1st and April 15th.
In addition, you can now change your boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train's departure—a feature particularly helpful for passengers who get stuck in traffic jams or face delays. Previously, this facility was available only before the reservation chart was prepared; however, the process has now been streamlined and digitized. Furthermore, if necessary, passengers can also change their travel class—for instance, upgrading from Third AC to Second AC, or downgrading to Sleeper Class.
Information Provided by the Government
As a measure to enhance transparency—and to ensure passengers are informed promptly regarding the confirmation status of their tickets—the Railways has extended the window for preparing reservation charts from the previous 4 hours to a new range of 9 to 18 hours before departure. This initiative provides greater clarity regarding travel arrangements, particularly for passengers traveling from distant locations. As part of these ongoing efforts to improve the passenger experience, the refund rules have also been revised in conjunction with the new chart preparation window, with no additional costs levied on passengers. This transparent reform not only ensures that passengers receive timely clarity but also helps to crack down on unauthorized ticket agents.
Passengers will soon be able to change their boarding station up to the final 30 minutes before departure. Additionally, subject to availability, they will be able to upgrade their travel class up to 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure. **New Rules for Ticket Cancellation**
**Time Before Train Departure** | **Cancellation Rule** | **Cancellation Charge**
**72 to 24 hours prior** | Standard Deduction | Up to 25% of the fare will be deducted (minimum charge applicable).
**24 to 8 hours prior** | Late Cancellation | Up to 50% of the fare will be deducted (minimum charge applicable).
**Less than 8 hours prior** | Cancellation Closed | No refund will be granted.
Old Rules for Train Ticket Cancellation
Previously, canceling a confirmed ticket incurred varying charges depending on the timing of the cancellation. If a ticket was canceled more than 48 hours prior to the train's departure, only a flat fee was deducted: ₹240 plus GST for Executive Class, and ₹180 plus GST for AC Class. Furthermore, if canceled between 48 and 12 hours prior to departure, 25% of the fare was deducted (subject to a minimum deduction equal to the flat fee). If canceled between 12 and 4 hours prior, 50% of the fare was deducted. If a ticket was not canceled within 4 hours of the train's departure, no refund was provided.
For waitlisted tickets, only a nominal fee of ₹20 plus GST was deducted. If a ticket remained fully waitlisted even after the reservation chart was prepared, it would be automatically canceled, and the full amount would be refunded without any deductions. Additionally, in cases where the train was completely canceled or delayed by more than 3 hours, a full refund could be obtained by filing a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt).
