The Henley Passport Index once again shows how geography, diplomacy, and political stability continue to shape global mobility and international travel freedom.
Right behind Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates jointly hold the second position in the 2026 passport ranking. Citizens of these countries enjoy visa-free access to 187 destinations.
Among them, the United Arab Emirates holds the strongest passport outside East Asia. However, UAE passport holders still need a visa to enter the United States, unlike citizens of Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.
European countries remain among the strongest performers in the Passport Ranking 2026. Countries such as Norway and Switzerland offer visa-free access to 185 countries.
Although the European Union follows a shared passport framework, visa-free travel access is not exactly the same across all member states. For example, Bulgaria and Romania provide access to 177 countries, while Sweden reaches 186 destinations.
On average, European Union passports offer access to around 183 destinations. That places them slightly ahead of Canada, which offers access to 182 countries, and the United States, which stands at 179.
At the lower end of the Passport Ranking 2026, the difference in travel freedom becomes much more visible. Citizens of the weakest-ranked countries can travel to fewer than 50 countries without a visa.
These nations often deal with political instability, conflict, or high migration rates, which usually result in stricter visa rules. Some examples include Nigeria with access to 44 countries, Somalia with 32, and the Democratic Republic of Congo with 43.
Pakistan is also among the weakest passports in the world. It ranks 98th, tied with Yemen, and offers access to only around 31 to 35 countries through visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival.
