Why is sweet served with water in Indian homes?

Why Was Sweet Served With Water In Indian Homes? Earlier, whenever a guest came to Indian homes, he was not only given water. A little sweet was also served along with the water. Somewhere sugar candy was given, somewhere jaggery, and somewhere a small piece of sweet. Today, even though this tradition is gradually decreasing, but behind it, not only hospitality but also many reasons related to health and culture are also considered. In Indian culture, sweet has always been associated with auspiciousness, happiness, and respect. The tradition of starting any auspicious work by serving sweets is centuries old. This is the reason why giving sweets along with water to the guest was considered a way of showing respect and affection.

Now let's consider whether this has any bearing on our health. The answer is yes. Dr. Nischal Gupta explained in a video that whenever guests visited our homes, they were not only offered water but also something sweet, especially jaggery.

Why were people given sweets with water in earlier times?

Explaining the reason behind this, Dr. Nischal says that when someone came to our house, they would travel a long distance. In ancient times, there were no air-conditioned vehicles like today; people often traveled on foot or by ordinary means. This left them tired and their bodies lost many essential nutrients through sweat. According to Dr. Gupta, jaggery was considered very beneficial during such times because it contains many essential elements like vitamins, iron, calcium, and magnesium. It helped to compensate for hydration and nutrition loss to a large extent.

Sweets are also considered beneficial in Ayurveda.

Even in Ayurveda, sweets were not completely frowned upon. It was believed that moderate amounts of sweetness could provide instant energy. Especially in the summer, offering a small amount of jaggery or sugar candy with water to someone returning from outside was considered a way to soothe the body. The ingredients used in many traditional sweets were also associated with health. For example, cardamom was considered good for digestion, while saffron was believed to improve mood. Jaggery was linked to increasing oxygen in the blood, and ghee was linked to better absorption of nutrients.
