In such a situation, it’s important to take care of your health, but staying safe in the intense heat is no less a challenge. The average human body temperature is considered to be 36.9 degrees, but when the ambient temperature rises, our body begins to absorb heat, which can lead to health deterioration. To balance this, the body responds by sweating more. The risk of heatstroke is quite common during the summer season, and when our body is unable to regulate its temperature, it affects many bodily functions. Let’s find out from an expert what preventative measures you can try. Dr. Sri Karan Uddesh Tanugula, a Consultant General Physician at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, provides information on this matter.
How to keep yourself safe amid rising temperatures?
- · Drink 3-4 liters of water daily to stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol during this season, and limit your caffeine intake, such as tea and coffee.
- · Wear a hat and sunglasses when going out, and wear loose cotton clothing. Avoid going out between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Morning and evening are the best times to go outside.
- · If you experience symptoms like vomiting, dizziness, increased heartbeat, difficulty thinking, or a severe headache, get out of the sun and into a cool place immediately. Wet a cloth and drink an electrolyte solution.
- · Children and the elderly need extra care during this time. Those with heart disease or diabetes should also take special care during this time.
- · Include foods like cucumber, watermelon, and oranges, which are high in water, in your diet. Keep the house cool with fans and air conditioners. Don’t leave anyone in a parked car during this time.
- · Dehydration during this time can further worsen your health. Therefore, avoid becoming dehydrated. This can affect vital organs like the heart and kidneys.
- · If you experience excessive dryness in your mouth, dark yellow urine, muscle pain, or weakness, pay attention.
