Best Way to Clean After Pooping: Many people wipe their bowel movements with toilet paper after defecating. However, you should keep in mind that this can also cause various illnesses.

Disadvantages of toilet paper

Can Toilet Paper Cause Infection? Doctors say that most of us have been using toilet paper incorrectly for years, and this habit can sometimes pose a health risk. It may sound a bit uncomfortable, but the truth is that this small everyday mistake can lead to infections and other problems.

A common mistake is wiping from back to front. Experts say this can push bacteria near the anus to the front, where they shouldn't be. The correct method is to wipe from front to back, i.e., downward in the direction of the urinary tract. This reduces the risk of spreading harmful bacteria.

What do experts say?

Dr. Joseph Salhab, a gastroenterologist practicing in Florida, shared a list of common bathroom habits that can be detrimental to health. According to him, rinsing toilet paper in the wrong direction can introduce bacteria, increasing the risk of urinary tract infections. Not only the method, but the amount of toilet paper used is also crucial. According to the hygiene technology expert, about 10 sheets are sufficient for one use of the toilet. He added that using more paper than necessary is not only wasteful but can also lead to clogged toilets.

How many sheets do people use?

According to data from toilet paper manufacturing company Cushionelle, people usually use around 7 sheets at a time. However, proper cleaning is more important than the number of sheets. If the stool is not cleaned completely, it can cause itching, burning, and discomfort. Doctors also advise avoiding toilet paper. The fragrances, colours, and chemicals present in them can cause irritation in sensitive areas. According to dieticians, the chemicals used in scented toilet paper are not good for the body and can increase problems like yeast infection and irritation.

How to use paper

Now the question arises: should we use crumpled paper or folded paper? According to pharmacists and skincare experts, using crumpled paper is preferable. This ensures better hygiene and reduces paper waste. According to the National Institute of Health, USA, handwashing is equally important before using the restroom. This reduces the risk of bacteria entering the body and problems like urine infection.
