Train Waiting List Rules: Which Train Ticket Gets Confirmed First? What Do GNWL and PQWL Mean?

Train Waiting Ticket Rules: While traveling by Indian Railways is often a pleasant and exciting experience, securing a confirmed ticket can prove to be an equally significant challenge. During festive seasons—such as Diwali and Chhath—or during summer vacations, the volume of passengers surges to such an extent that not everyone is able to obtain a confirmed seat; consequently, the Railways issues waiting list tickets.

The Railways offers several different categories of waiting list tickets.

Most passengers book their tickets well in advance, hoping that their seats will be confirmed in good time; however, quite often, the ticket remains on the waiting list right up until the final reservation chart is prepared. In reality, obtaining a confirmed ticket is not merely a game of chance; rather, it is governed by specific technical rules and priority protocols established by the Railways.

Very few people are aware of the various types of waiting list tickets that exist, or which specific waiting list offers the highest probability of ticket confirmation. The Railways' waiting list system comprises several distinct categories, including the General Waiting List (GNWL), Remote Location Waiting List (RLWL), Pooled Quota Waiting List (PQWL), and Tatkal Quota Waiting List (TQWL).

The General Waiting List (GNWL) is issued when a passenger is traveling from the train's originating station (the station where the train journey begins).

For instance, if you purchase a ticket from Delhi for a train bound for Mumbai, you will be assigned a GNWL status. However, if you purchase a ticket for the same train from an intermediate station along the route, you will not be placed on the General Waiting List. This specific waiting list category carries the highest probability of ticket confirmation.

The Remote Location Waiting List (RLWL) is issued for tickets booked from stations designated as "intermediate important stations" along the train's route.

For example, if a passenger books a ticket from Patna for a train traveling from Howrah to Delhi, they will receive an RLWL ticket. The chances of confirmation for this list are lower than those for the GNWL.

The Pooled Quota Waiting List (PQWL) is designated for passengers traveling between intermediate stations—that is, stations situated between the train's originating point and its final destination. This type of waiting list ticket is issued when booking from smaller stations located along the train's route.

The chances of obtaining a confirmed ticket from this waiting list are also quite low.

When a confirmed seat is not allotted upon booking a Tatkal ticket, a Tatkal Quota Waiting List (TQWL) status is issued. The likelihood of this getting confirmed is the lowest, as there is no separate quota allocated for it.
