Akshaya Tritiya 2026 Date: The third Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh is celebrated as Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej. This day is deemed highly auspicious according to Vedic texts, making it an ideal time for various significant activities. It is particularly favored for weddings, religious observances, and shopping. The belief is that any good deed performed on this day yields *Akshaya*, meaning eternal benefits. Additionally, purchasing items on this day is thought to attract the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. In this article, we will delve into the date of Akshaya Tritiya, its worship practices, and its importance.
Akshaya Tritiya Worship Rituals
On Akshaya Tritiya, it is customary to rise before dawn and take a ritual bath. After bathing, one should don clean attire. The worship area (Puja Sthal) at home should be purified with holy Ganges water. A red or yellow cloth is then spread over a *Chowki* (low stool) or *Asana* (seat), where the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu are placed.
While holding water, *Akshat* (unbroken rice), and flowers, devotees take a solemn pledge (Sankalp) to observe the fast. Following this, *Roli* (red vermilion), sandalwood paste, turmeric, and *Kumkum* (sacred red powder) are applied as *Tilak* (sacred marks) on the idols.
Offer yellow flowers to Lord Vishnu and lotus or pink flowers to Goddess Lakshmi. Incense sticks and a *Ghee* (clarified butter) lamp should be lit at the worship site. As *Naivedya* (sacred food offering), barley or wheat *Sattu* (roasted flour), fruits, sweets, and soaked chickpeas are presented to the deities.
Reciting the 'Vishnu Sahasranama' is believed to bring great spiritual merit. Listening to or reading the sacred stories related to Akshaya Tritiya is also encouraged. The worship concludes with the *Aarti* (ritual lamp ceremony) for Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Finally, donations of food, clothing, water, fruits, gold, or silver should be made to the needy, according to one's ability.
The Significance of Akshaya Tritiya
Traditionally, any virtuous act performed on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to yield eternal results. It is a day for charity, meditation, bathing in the holy Ganges, and worship. Scriptures suggest that starting any new venture on this day leads to prosperity. The Puranas state that Mother Ganga descended to Earth on Akshaya Tritiya, marking it as a significant day. This occasion also symbolizes the beginning of a new era.
Religious beliefs assert that the Satya, Treta, and Dwapara Yugas all began on Akshaya Tritiya. Each year, the opening of the Gangotri and Yamunotri temples in Uttarakhand on this auspicious day signifies the start of the Char Dham Yatra.
