Newspoint
Overview of Mohini Ekadashi

The *Mohini Ekadashi* fast is celebrated on the *Shukla Ekadashi*, which falls on the eleventh day of the waxing moon in the month of *Vaishakh*. This year, it is set to take place on April 27th. A common concern among devotees is whether taking medication during this fast is acceptable and if it would compromise the fast. Let's delve into what the scriptures indicate regarding this matter.

Advantages of Observing the Ekadashi Fast

**Advantages of the Ekadashi Fast**
In Hindu texts, the *Ekadashi* fast holds significant importance, positively impacting one's physical health. It is believed that fasting on every *Ekadashi Tithi* helps cleanse a devotee's sins and grants them the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Additionally, this fast is thought to promote mental tranquility and is beneficial for enhancing devotion and spiritual development.

Medication During the Fast

**Can One Take Medication?**
It is suggested that if one's mind and body are not fully engaged in devotion, simply refraining from food may not yield substantial spiritual benefits. Ignoring health while fasting contradicts scriptural teachings. A healthy body is crucial for worship, so if necessary, taking medication during the fast is permissible. If medication requires food intake, one can opt for a *Phalahari* fast, which includes fruits and milk, and have something light after taking the medicine.

Scriptural Guidance

**What the Scriptures Say**
According to religious texts, fasting on *Ekadashi* while ill or on medication is optional. Those who are unwell or taking medication may choose to fast by consuming fruits (*Phalahar*) instead of adhering to a strict *Nirjala* (waterless) fast. This guidance also applies to children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

If health worsens during the fast, it is advisable to prioritize health and either skip the fast or break it. In such cases, one can conclude the fast with an apology to Lord Vishnu, which does not incur any spiritual fault.

Guidelines for Observing the Ekadashi Fast

**Rules for the Ekadashi Fast**
On *Ekadashi*, it is prohibited to pluck leaves from the *Tulsi* (Holy Basil) plant or offer water to it. Additionally, consuming rice is not allowed on this day.
During the worship, ensure that Tulsi leaves are included in the offerings (*Bhog*) to Lord Vishnu.
On the following day, known as 'Paran', take an early morning bath and worship Lord Vishnu before breaking the fast after sunrise.
