Which City Runs India’s Oldest Public Bus Transport Service?

Long before metro trains, ride-hailing apps and modern transport systems changed the way Indians travelled, one city had already created a public bus network that became a lifeline for millions. That city is Mumbai, home to India’s oldest public bus transport system.

For decades, the city’s iconic red buses have been an inseparable part of daily life, helping people travel to offices, schools, markets and railway stations with ease. Operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport, popularly known as BEST, the service is regarded as the oldest continuously running public bus transport network in the country.

When Did Mumbai’s Bus Service Begin?

BEST started its public bus operations on July 15, 1926. The first route connected Afghan Church in Colaba to Crawford Market, now called Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market. At a time when trams and horse-drawn carriages were commonly used, the launch of buses marked a major step forward in urban public transport in India.

The service quickly gained popularity because it offered a more reliable and organised mode of travel for commuters across the city.

How BEST Buses Became Mumbai’s Identity

The first buses used by BEST were basic single-decker vehicles imported from abroad. Although they lacked the comfort and technology seen in modern buses, they transformed public transportation in Mumbai.

Over the years, BEST introduced double-decker buses, which eventually became one of the most recognisable symbols of the city. Even today, these buses continue to hold a nostalgic place in the hearts of many Mumbaikars.

Why Mumbai Needed A Strong Public Transport System

As Mumbai expanded rapidly and its population grew, dependable public transport became essential. The BEST bus network connected different neighbourhoods and provided an affordable travel option to millions of residents every day.

For generations, Mumbai’s public buses have remained one of the cheapest and most accessible ways to commute in the city. From office-goers to students, countless people have depended on the service for daily travel.

The Legacy Of India’s Oldest Public Bus Network

Interestingly, BEST originally began as an electric tram service before moving into bus operations. Over the decades, it evolved into one of the country’s most important public transport systems.

Mumbai’s pioneering bus network also played a significant role in shaping organised road transport in India. Even in the age of metro rail and app-based taxis, BEST buses continue to remain an important part of Mumbai’s transport culture and heritage.
