Anyone experiencing 'worrying symptoms' is encouraged to visit Tesco for a quick and easy assessment by a healthcare professional. With more than 350 Tesco pharmacies throughout the UK, you can get help with early diagnoses even during your shopping trips.

While these pharmacies are equipped to address various minor health issues, such as sore throats or earaches, pharmacists are also on hand to assist with cancer-related concerns. Tesco stressed this fact in a recent online post, after YouGov statistics showed that many people are putting off crucial cancer checks.

Tom Lye, Tesco Health and Wellness Category Director, said: "We know how many barriers there can be in day-to-day life around getting health concerns checked out. Customers can quickly and easily see a pharmacist at one of over 350 Tesco Pharmacies.

"Informed by their specialist Cancer Research UK training, pharmacists can have a confidential conversation about any worrying symptoms which could support customers in getting an earlier cancer diagnosis."

Across England, only 55.3% of cancer cases are diagnosed early, although this significantly varies between regions. Tesco explained that reasons for delaying check-ups include difficulties securing GP appointments, choosing to manage symptoms alone, or simply having other concerns to worry about.

Customers at Tesco's pharmacies can have a private, confidential consultation with a health professional at a time that suits their schedule, including evenings and weekends, without needing an appointment.

While Tesco and Cancer Research UK are running a health campaign between November 17 and 30, these pharmacists are available all year round.

Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, added: "Nearly one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime. Spotting cancer early can make all the difference, so it’s incredibly important that people get the support they need when they notice something that’s not right for them.

"That’s why we’ve joined forces with Tesco, to make it easier for people to talk to a professional about any concerns, and ultimately, to help diagnose cancers earlier and save lives."

Potential cancer symptoms explained

Cancer is a condition where cells grow uncontrollably in the body. While symptoms may differ depending on the type, the NHS has outlinedsome common red flags, including:

  • A new lump or swelling anywhere on your body
  • Sweating a lot (particularly at night) or a high temperature that lasts a long time or keeps coming back
  • Feeling more tired than usual
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding (such as bleeding from your bottom, blood in your pee or vomiting blood)
  • Pain anywhere in your body that's not usual for you
  • Losing weight without trying or feeling less hungry than usual
  • Needing to pee more often or more urgently, or pain when you pee

Nonetheless, official NHS guidance adds: "Most of these symptoms are very common and can be caused by other conditions. Having these symptoms does not definitely mean you have cancer, but it's important to get checked by a GP.

"If your symptoms are caused by cancer, finding it early may mean it's easier to treat." Visit the NHS websitefor more information.
