Spiritual Significance Of Chaitra Durga Ashtami

Durga Ashtami is a day that celebrates the divine feminine power embodied by Goddess Maha Gauri. According to Hindu scriptures, the goddess appeared in her powerful form after receiving reverence from all gods and deities following the defeat of numerous demons. Maa Durga, regarded as the mother of the universe, represents creation, preservation, and destruction. She carries ten arms, each holding a weapon, symbolising protection and strength. The day commemorates her triumph over evil forces like Chand, Mund, Shumbh, Nishumbh, Raktabeej, and Mahishasura, highlighting the eternal victory of good over evil.

Rituals And Practices On Durga Ashtami

One of the central traditions involves inviting nine young girls into homes, representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Devotees apply tika to their foreheads, wash their feet, and offer sattvik meals such as halwa, poori, and chana. Gifts and dakshina are presented as tokens of respect, and their blessings are sought by touching their feet. Many households extend these acts of kindness to underprivileged children, distributing food, fruits, and clothes, reinforcing the day’s spirit of generosity and devotion.
