1. Begin the Fast with a Sankalp (Vow)

Start your day by taking a vow to observe the fast with sincerity, devotion, and discipline. Pray to Lord Krishna and commit to following the fasting rituals.

Traditional Janmashtami fasting requires avoiding rice, wheat, lentils, and regular flour-based items. Instead, use alternative flours like buckwheat (kuttu) or water chestnut (singhara) for preparing dishes.

3. Eat Only Satvik Food

Only consume food made without onion, garlic, or spices like turmeric. Common fasting items include sabudana khichdi, makhana kheer, fruits, and milk-based sweets.

4. Offer Bhog to Lord Krishna First

Before eating anything, prepare a special offering (bhog) for Lord Krishna, which may include butter, milk, fruits, and sweets like panjiri or makhan mishri.


5. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water, coconut water, buttermilk, or lemon water to maintain hydration throughout the day, especially if you are doing a nirjala fast (without water).

6. Break the Fast at Midnight

As per tradition, the fast is broken at midnight after offering prayers during the birth hour (Janmotsav) of Lord Krishna. Devotees often eat prasad first before having a full meal.
