When To Celebrate Diwali 2025? Kashi Vidwat Parishad Confirms The Date

Newspoint
Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of India’s most beloved celebrations, eagerly awaited across the globe. In 2025, however, a rare celestial overlap has sparked debate over the exact date. The Amavasya Tithi , or new moon day central to Diwali, stretches across two days this year from October 20, 3:44 PM to October 21, 5:54 PM, according to Drik Panchang. This unusual timing left many wondering: should Diwali fall on the 20th or the 21st?

Why the confusion?

The uncertainty stems from the lunar calendar. While Amavasya spans both days, the Lakshmi Puja Muhurat , the most auspicious time to worship Goddess Lakshmi occurs on October 20. This moment also aligns with the traditional observance celebrating Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya, marking the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

Kashi Vidwat Parishad clears the air

To settle the debate, the Kashi Vidwat Parishad, a respected forum of scholars and spiritual authorities in Varanasi, declared that Diwali 2025 will be celebrated on Monday, October 20. Prof. Ramnarayan Dwivedi, the Parishad’s National General Secretary, confirmed that after detailed discussions, it was established that the full Pradosh Kaal (dusk period) falls on the 20th, making it the most auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja.

The final verdict: October 20

While the Amavasya Tithi technically continues into October 21, tradition and astrology point to October 20 as the ideal day for celebrations. Devotees are advised to observe Diwali on this date, performing Lakshmi Puja during the Pradosh Kaal to ensure maximum spiritual benefit.

The meaning of Diwali

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, commemorates Lord Rama’s victorious return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, as per the Ramayana. Residents lit oil lamps to guide him home, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. Today, the festival is celebrated with diyas, fireworks, sweets, and prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, bringing families together in joy and prosperity.

Despite the rare overlap of the Amavasya Tithi, clarity from the Kashi Vidwat Parishad ensures that devotees across India can celebrate Diwali 2025 confidently on October 20, honoring both tradition and astrological guidance.
