Adam Fox Olympic omission sparks debate as Bill Guerin fires back at Connor McDavid narrative

The talk started fast, and it spread even faster. When Team USA left Adam Fox off its Olympic roster, many fans pointed to one moment. That moment came in overtime against Canada at the 4 Nations Faceoff in February 2025. Connor McDavid scored the winning goal, and Fox was on the ice. Soon after the roster came out, some people claimed that one play cost Fox his Olympic spot.

Team USA general manager Bill Guerin quickly shut that idea down. He did not hesitate, and his message was clear. The decision, he said, was never about one shift or one goal. Guerin made it clear that Olympic picks come after months of review, not seconds of one game.

“If you think we made a decision on one play, then you must not be very smart,” Guerin said while responding to the online talk.

Fox was part of the 4 Nations tournament and played in all four games. He did not record a point, but he remained in the lineup throughout the event. After the Olympic roster was announced, Fox confirmed he received a direct call from Guerin explaining why he was left out.

“I don’t think you have any expectation for an Olympic spot,” Fox said, via NHL. “But I obviously thought my play this year was worthy of it and my track record as well. But it’s out of my hands at a certain point. The decision is the decision, and I guess that’s how it goes.”

Bill Guerin explains why Adam Fox missed out despite strong New York Rangers support
This season, Adam Fox has been solid when healthy. Despite missing time with an injury, he has four goals and 24 assists in 28 games. His plus-minus sits at plus-3. He continues to log heavy minutes and plays a key role on both ends of the ice for the New York Rangers.

Still, the Rangers have struggled as a team. They hold a 19-18-5 record and have lost four of their last five games. That context matters when roster choices get tight.

The U.S. blue line pool is deep. Defensemen like Brock Faber, Noah Hanifin, Quinn Hughes, Seth Jones, and Charlie McAvoy all earned spots. With limited room, even top players can miss out.

According to ESPN reporter Emily Kaplan, Fox had strong backing from his own team. Rangers general manager Chris Drury, head coach Mike Sullivan, and assistant coach David Quinn all supported his case.

“Adam Fox did not make the U.S. Olympic team,” Kaplan wrote on X. “Heard New York Rangers personnel involved with Team USA, GM Chris Drury, coach Mike Sullivan, assistant David Quinn, all pushed very hard for Fox, but they understood the decision, especially given the depth USA has on defense.”

For now, Fox is focused on his NHL season. If injuries open a spot later, he remains ready. Until then, the noise around one goal is something Team USA has clearly put to rest.
