BCCI Rejects Claims of Ajit Agarkar Seeking Extension Before 2027 ODI World Cup
The Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI ) has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that chief selector Ajit Agarkar requested a contract extension leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup .
According to a senior official, no such discussion has taken place, putting an end to speculation surrounding Agarkar’s future in the role.
A senior BCCI official clarified that there has been no such request or conversation regarding an extension, noting that the current structure does not require the chief selector to formally apply for renewal at this stage.
"Ajit's contract ends in September, and after that, the BCCI secretary and Ajit will have to decide whether he will continue until next year's ODI World Cup. A senior selector can continue up to four years as per the constitution, and he doesn't need to seek an extension," a senior BCCI official told PTI.
This clarification highlights that any decision regarding Agarkar’s continuation will be taken at the appropriate time rather than through any premature request.
The tournament, set to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, remains a key target for Indian cricket.
As part of preparations, around 20 probable players have been shortlisted. The five-member selection panel will closely monitor their performances during the upcoming IPL season.
Panel members will be stationed across different cities to track matches in person. Ajit Agarkar will oversee games in Mumbai, while other selectors will cover regions such as Kolkata, the National Capital Region, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
The goal is to ensure consistent monitoring, with the panel aiming to observe multiple matches every week.
