Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Stunning IPL Numbers Show Selectors May Have Made a Big Mistake

Newspoint

The national selectors may have moved past Bhuvneshwar Kumar in T20Is, but India’s "Swing King" is answering with numbers in Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He took three wickets during his first three overs when he immediately used the new ball against Delhi Capitals. Bhuvneshwar last played for India in 2022, yet his record over the last three to four years shows that, even at 36, he remains one of the deadliest Powerplay bowlers in Indian cricket.

The biggest proof of Bhuvneshwar’s value is his control in the first six overs. The IPL has seen no bowler achieve greater success than him at obtaining early breakthroughs since 2023 began. He has already achieved 14 wickets from 8 matches during this season while he continues to take wickets during Powerplay situations for RCB.

Most Wickets in Powerplay (IPL since 2023):

32 - Bhuvneshwar Kumar

32 - Trent Boult

28 - Mohammed Siraj

28 - Mohammed Shami

24 - Deepak Chahar

24 - Arshdeep Singh

The achievement of matching Trent Boult who most people consider to be the best new-ball bowler in the world stands as an important accomplishment. Bhuvneshwar achieved this strike rate because he bowled on batting-friendly grounds which include M Chinnaswamy Stadium and Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Bhuvneshwar's success is not only about current form. He remains a standout performer in IPL history. He now owns 20 three-wicket hauls in the tournament which places him behind Jasprit Bumrah who has 25. He holds the record for most dot balls thrown in IPL history. Recently he became the first Indian fast bowler to achieve 200 IPL wickets and currently he has 212 wickets.

Many critics blamed a drop in pace for his T20I exit after the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. His 2026 statistics demonstrate an alternate reality. The data reveals him to be a skilled bowler who has modified his playing style.

The Impact Player rule enables teams to reach 200-point totals because it allows them to make efficient player substitutions. A bowler who delivers Powerplay wickets while maintaining an economy rate below 8.00 costs teams nothing because of his rare value. India needs to find a suitable partner for Bumrah which Bhuvneshwar Kumar proves through his current performance.

The numbers prove that Bengaluru's bowling leader should be selected by selectors who want to create an impact.
