Big Blow for Sri Lanka as Star Pacer Misses T20 World Cup 2026

Sri Lankan cricket has received a major setback ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. Eshan Malinga who plays as a fast bowler will miss the tournament because his shoulder was dislocated during the second T20I match against England on Sunday.

 

Malinga suffered his injury during the England inning when he lost control while delivering a high full toss ball to Tom Banton.

He immediately grabbed his left shoulder and fell to the ground. The team physio rushed onto the field, and Malinga received medical attention before he left the field.

 

The pacer will now travel to Colombo for scans. The initial findings indicate that he will remain inactive for four to six weeks which prevents him from participating in the World Cup.

 

Madushanka or Madushan Set to Replace Malinga

 

According to Sri Lankan journalist Nibraz Ramzan, the selectors are considering Dilshan Madushanka and Pramod Madushan as possible replacements for the injured pacer.

The team will select one final player to join the main roster from these two candidates.

 

The selectors face a challenging decision because both bowlers bring distinct abilities that are needed by the team.

Why Sri Lanka Will Miss Eshan Malinga

 

The absence of Malinga will create a significant impact on Sri Lanka despite their strong pace options who include Matheesha Pathirana and Dushmantha Chameera.

He provided a unique element to the bowling group which needed his presence.

 

Malinga was supposed to take charge of the crucial death overs. He was regarded as one of Sri Lanka's top players for critical moments because he could deliver precise yorkers while maintaining his performance during extreme situations. The timing of Malinga's injury is unfortunate because Pathirana has been showing inconsistent performance lately.

 

Madushanka vs Madushan: Who Fits Better?

 

Dilshan Madushanka is a left-arm seamer who performs best when he bowls new balls. He has played 15 T20I matches and taken 15 wickets but his economy rate is 9.75 which exceeds the acceptable limit.

 

Pramod Madushan has taken 12 wickets from 8 T20I matches while maintaining an economical rate of 8.63. He looks sharper in the middle and death overs, which could make him a like-for-like replacement for Malinga.

 

Sri Lanka’s Group Stage Schedule

 

Sri Lanka are placed in Group B alongside Australia, Ireland, Oman, and Zimbabwe. Their first match against Ireland will take place on February 8, followed by their games against Oman on February 12 and Australia on February 16 and Zimbabwe on February 19.
