Explained: What Happens if India and Pakistan Reach T20 World Cup 2026 Final?

Newspoint

The T20 World Cup 2026 match boycott by Pakistan against India has generated major controversy. The match, scheduled for February 15 in Colombo, will not see Pakistan take the field. The Pakistan government approved the team to participate in the tournament, but they confirmed that Pakistan will not face India.

The fans and experts now raise a larger question about the T20 World Cup 2026 final match between India and Pakistan. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and ICC have not provided any responses to the situation.

Why Pakistan Boycotted the India Match

The BCCI issued a release to Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL after he had protested against India. The Bangladesh Cricket Board decided to avoid their World Cup games in India because they believed the security situation was unsafe. They requested the ICC to shift their matches to Sri Lanka.

The ICC did not accept this request and instead replaced Bangladesh with Scotland. Pakistan declared its World Cup participation to be under review after this decision. The government confirmed that Pakistan would compete in the tournament after the PCB chief met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

What if India and Pakistan Reach the Final?

Pakistan currently lacks any information about their potential actions if both teams reach the final match. The ICC would experience major difficulties if Pakistan decided to boycott the final. A World Cup final without one team taking the field would be a major embarrassment and could lead to serious financial losses.

The Indian team stands as the top contender to reach the final, while Pakistan's chances are slim match. However, the game of cricket is extremely unpredictable and if both the Asian giants reach to the final and Pakistan decides to boycott that game, India will be handed the trophy.

Although, there is no official statement on this, but the ICC will need to make a firm decision only if Pakistan reaches the final match and chooses to boycott.

The Pakistan national team will now concentrate on advancing from the group stage. The team needs to win all their remaining matches to avoid losing two points from their India match boycott. The team faces elimination risks which can make the final scenario become unimportant.
