Florian Wirtz can't hide true feelings after cruel bombshell in live Sky Sports interview

Liverpool playmaker Florian Wirtz got closer to his first Reds goal on Wednesday night but was again cruelly denied. The £116million summer signing saw his late effort beat Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs and settle in the back of the net, but it was going wide before deflecting in off Nordi Mukiele.

The goal was eventually ruled to be a Mukiele own goal, and Wirtz was informed of this live on Sky Sports after the match. And the German international - who was also smartly denied by Roefs in the first half - looked visibly disappointed, before he made his feelings on the matter clear,

Wirtz looked disappointed in his post-match interview, but that wasn't due to the goal being taken away from him. "It doesn't matter today," he said. "We drew, we wanted to win - that's all that counts today."

Former Bayer Leverkusen man Wirtz began his Liverpool career with an assist in the Community Shield but things have been tough for him and for the team as a whole. He will get the assist for the Mukiele own goal - his first in the Premier League to go along with two in the Champions League - but the wait for a first Reds goal continues.

Even so, the 22-year-old has spoken about the support his new team-mates have given him since he arrived from the Bundesliga. "I was very welcomed by the team. It is a very good team and I am very happy to be here," he said.

"We are on a good way to come back and we are doing everything to come back and win games. We wanted the win today, we want to be on top of the table and we just have to keep working hard and hopefully things will change."

Reflecting further on the draw, Wirtz told club media he felt Liverpool were close to finding top form again. Their next game comes against a Leeds side who beat Chelsea on Wednesday, and they take on Inter Milan in their final Champions League game of 2025 just days later.

"In the end we get one point and that is better than nothing…" he said. "We did a good job after [going 1-0 down against Sunderland] and we have to keep going like this in the next games.”

“We have unbelievable quality in the changing room – personalities and great players. We just have still to find each other a bit more and to create a bit better momentum for us and then I think everything will go in our direction soon. But we just have to work hard and stay together as a team and as a club, and hopefully we will be more successful.”
